Project 2 - Design a World
My group was given the task to design a new world, we brain stormed a few ideas such as a world inside a human or a time portal. Eventually we agreed on the idea I had about creating a world displaying different sections of history in a pot. I was inspired by a hoax news report from February 2006 that went viral on the internet; it claimed that Belgian archaeologists were able to use computer scans of the grooves in 6,500 year old pottery to extract sounds such as talking and laughing. The pottery allegedly had waveforms engraved into the grooves as the potter cut a line with a stylus while the pot spun.
The group then decided we would like to focus on Irish history mainly focusing on Belfast during three major historical events, The Famine, The Blitz and The Troubles. As I was not confident with drawing during the project, I decide I could contribute by researching these historical events, how the population was effected and what Belfast looked like. I would then pass all of this information onto the rest of the team so they could produce historically correct drawings for each world.

Project 3 - Character Design
My group this week were given the task of designing the characters for the crystal egg world. I put forward the suggestion of making the characters look different depending on what section of the egg they live on, for example the character living in the crystal area of the world would have hard and sharper bodies.
I also made the suggestion that the characters would produce their own light source. The rest of the group liked these ideas so we decided to expand on them and decided together on an art style. After this we went our separate ways to produce some sketches of characters, we shared these with each other on Facebook and gave each other feedback on how to improve them. The two drawings I produced for this project were used for final characters and are seen below.
The first picture is a drawing of a character that would be found in the forest area of the world and the second is a crystal like character that would live in the crystal section of the world.

Project 5 - Colour World
My group was given the task of bringing colour to the marble world. This world was split into four separate worlds, so we decide to set a colour theme for each layer. I then made the suggestion to the group that we should take into account how light is effected passing through a marble, and followed this up with research, finding out that light is brighter in the centre of the marble and diffuses through the rest of it. Taking this into consideration I suggested to the group that we should try and bring this across in colour, making the centre world brighter and vibrant and the other world darker.
We then started colouring the characters and the ones I worked on are visible below, there is one each from the first three sections of the world.

Project 6 - Storyboard and Animatic
My group was given the task of producing a storyboard for a short animatic that would introduce the characters of the world. The first thing we did was sort out the narrative of the animatic, I gave the suggestion that we should have one main character and follow them as they walk, having the other character in the back ground to quickly introduce them within the time limit. I also made the suggestion that we use a pan upward in order to show the different sections of the world and to intro the other characters in them. The rest of the group liked these ideas so we started expanding on them, creating our final narrative. We then split the narrative into sections and took one each to do a rough storyboard.
Once we had done this, Thomas and Jenny took over the drawing, as my drawing technic wasn't as high a standard and I took on the role of writing out the events, music, sound effects and colour of each scene. When this section of the work was complete, we moved onto the animatic. During this process I edited two short anima tics together using Adobe Premier using the rough storyboard and then the improved storyboard by Thomas and Jenny.
Below you can see my section of the rough storyboard drawings and the two animatics I edited together with Thomas and Jenny’s art work.

Project 6 - Animatic
My group was given the task of making a short animatic with music and colour to introduce the hour glass world. We started by deciding on an art style and narrative, I gave the suggestion that we should work on the narrative that the previous group had been working on, making a lead up to the broken hour glass. I also suggested that we should use similar drawings in both of the worlds in order to show the differences in the environments clearly. The group like these ideas so we expand upon them by doing research into games such as Ori. We then spilt up the tasks that needed to be done, we each took on the ones we felt most confident in and started to make the animatic.
I took on the task of making the music due to the fact I was the only one in the group that had any music training. I used a Ukulele, Banjo, Concertina and Bodhran in order to make the piece of music. I then edited in FCPX on the computer and put it in reverse in order to give it a creepy, eerie vibe.
Once I finished the music I started gathering the art work from the other group members and edited together the animatic, adding music to it, making the view zoom in and pan upward to add a slight movement to the still images and making the scenes change in time with the music.

Project 7 - Game, History and Culture
My group was given the task of building a game that had a history and brought across the culture of the crystal egg world. Unfortunately I was off sick during this project but stayed in contact the best I could with the group and tried to contribute as much work as I could. To start with I carried out some research on games that already existed, trying to work out what they had in common and what made them so successful. I then suggested an idea for the history of the world, culture behind the game and the game itself to the group. I had the idea of having board games where the characters would have to solve riddles and challenges, in order to move up the social ladder.
The group decided to expand on this idea, changing it into a physical maze where the adolescents of the world would have to complete and variety of different challenges and riddles in order to find the prize at the end and escape the maze. I then took on the task of creating the challenges the character would face in the maze. I made to the suggestion to the group that we should use the true meaning behind children nursery rhymes to symbolise the transition from childhood to adult hood. The group liked this idea so I started do research into the true meaning of nursery rhymes, and used these meanings to form challenges connected to them.
Once I had shared all of these ideas with the team and they agreed, I made slides for the presentation displaying my research and work in to the challenges.

Presentation on Roger Deakins & Seamus McGarvey
My group was given the task to create a presentation of 20 slides that lasted a max of 6mins and 40sec on the two cinematographers Seamus McGarvey and Roger Deakins. I carried out research on both of these cinematographers and started to put together the slide show presentation using both my research and that of the rest of the team. I then supplied some talk notes for the group to expand on. I took most of the responsibly of this project along with Beccaa, as I was off sick during project 4.
Self - Assessment
Coming from a mainly science and non-art background, I found this module a bit hard to adjust to. There was less structure than what I was used to in my previous courses, such as there not being a wrong answer. I found this difficult at the beginning but as time passed, I was able to adjust and appreciate being able to be more flexible in my work. Although it still leaves me slightly apprehensive as I’m never 100% sure if I am doing everything I am required to do.
Also coming from a non-art background I struggled a lot with the art aspects of this module, such as drawings of characters and world structures. However as the course continued I began to find my strengths in different areas such as narrative ideas, research and editing animatic and music.
During this module we had photography tasks where we had to take 600 photos, 100 in each category. I felt more comfortable in this assignment than I had in the other, as I have had more experience in photography and editing photos in Photoshop.
We had a group presentation every week to display the work on the worlds/research/photography that we had done in the past week. This was the part of the module I found most challenging and failed to talk about my own work in front of the class. All of my team mates were very supportive and would talk to me beforehand so they would be able to present my input into the sections of work correctly.
We would also have weekly life drawing classes in this module, which again coming from a non-art back ground at the beginning I found very difficult, but with the help of the lecture Michael and practicing outside of class, I began to gain some confidence in life drawing. Although I have a long way to go in this area, I definitely feel like I have improved from the beginning of the semester.
Over all on this course I feel like I have gained confidence in most areas of this module with the help of my class mates and lectures, Conann and Michael. I hope in the next semester I can continue to work on improving my skills in these areas.
